In response to the free meal we offered during Stations, we coordinate one Saturday afternoon each month at the parish hall of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in downtown Scranton where we can offer food, fun, and fellowship to the poor and homeless of our community.
We learned several things about the needs people in our area have from our new friends that we shared dinner with at Stations. Suggestions included:
-
:: a space where people could come and relax for free without fear of being shooed away by shop owners or law enforcement
:: something that families could come to together and where kids could enjoy themselves
:: offering some basic services such as haircuts and basic medical check-ups
:: doing this sometime around the 3rd weekend of the month, because those receiving assistance checks are usually running low on resources at this time since most get their checks at the very end or very beginning of each month
:: coordinate with other area churches and see if they are offering something similar so that services don't overlap and can therefore be offered more times during a month
We took these suggestions very seriously and are hoping our Saturdays can eventually offer all of these things and more. St. Luke's parish hall has a large, drop down movie screen on a stage and we enjoyed showing family-friendly movies at our first FreeSpace in July.
This is an effort that will likely require more manpower than our small community of 20-25 people can supply. We are talking about ways to engage the parish of St. Luke's and other area churches that will inspire them to lend helping hands. Also, we would be glad to welcome anyone who wishes to make an impact on the Scranton area, regardless of their feelings about church or what faith tradition they might come from.
